Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine major depressive disorder through psychodynamic approach and therapy, delving into the unconscious through symbols and dreams. Major depression is a common and significant mental disorder that adversely affects one's daily life, functioning, and quality of life. Psychodynamic theory is a therapeutic approach used in understanding and treating major depression. In depression, impairments can be observed in memory, information processing, attentional focus, and executive functions. Memory disturbances, such as forgetfulness and difficulty in recall, often accompany depressive symptoms. Freud's concepts of mourning and melancholia have contributed to the understanding of depression. Depression can be associated with a decrease or collapse in self-worth and can develop as a response to object loss or rejection. Experiences of helplessness and inability to cope during childhood can be linked to depression. This study aims to contribute to the understanding and treatment of major depression from a psychodynamic perspective.
